Cavalry 32gb 2.5" SSD drive
Author: Gh0sTly -- Posted: 2008-12-04
We are all looking for that extra boost in speed, be in in boot time, or general load times for our OS or games, and Cavalry has answered this call with the impressive CASD00032MIS 32gb Solid State Drive in a 2.5" form factor.

This can is a SATA2 drive in a 2.5" hard drive size, so this is perfect for a laptop, and a drop in replacement, with no issues to speak of for a perfect fit. Because this drive has no motors in it, its perfectly silent, and it uses less power, so you will get a better battery life! Another wonderful benefit of a Solid State Drive(from hereon referred to as SSD,) you get faster read/write times, lower heat, and far better shock protection(perfect for Toughbooks, or people rough with their laptops!)

This drive sports some incredible speeds, and some nifty features as well. Cavalry states that the drive gets 80MB/Sec Sequential Read and 60MB/Sec Sequential Write times and 50MB/Sec Random Read and 12MB/Sec Random Write times, with a seek time of 0.1 millisecond. They also claim that its safe upto 20Gs of vibration, but we wont get to test that today. :)

If you notice from the pictures, this drive has a Mini-USB port on it next to the SATA port. This allows the drive to be used as a Pocket hard drive, right out of the box, and only uses one USB port for DATA and power the drive, where as most external pocket drive use 1 USB for DATA, and another for power. This makes for convenient travel when you have limited space in your laptop case.

Now I know you all want to know what this drive's real world scores are like, and unfortunately we do not have a laptop to test it in, so we will be using a desktop PC to do the testing. We will also test for boot times compared to a 500gb SATA2 desktop hard drive under Windows XP PRO.

As you can see, this drive does perform very well. I would have to say that it would perform better in a laptop. The boot times is where this drive really shined. The 500gb SATA2 hard drive took 17 seconds from the start of loading windows, to a usable desktop, where the SSD drive took 10 seconds.

Overall, the price for performance is well worth it, and has features that make this SSD drive a wonderful Pocket drive. If you are in the market for a nice SSD drive, this would be the one to get. They are available in 32, 64, and 128gb.

I would like to take this time to thank Cavalry for letting me review this fine SSD drive, and I look forward to reviewing more of their products in the future.
