i wanted to create this thread as quick refference to discuss the future store. I'm expecting to have it open between thanksgiving and christmas so definatly check the site regularly. Also submit your designs and see your work on the net, and credit will be given for all of these, i'm not out to steal some fame, just to make some amazing products. If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress?
lol yea the CRA(Canada Revenue Agency) is the same here, they audited my dad for like 3 years before they tried to charge him 50 grand in unpaid taxes saying he had a business cause he painted cars once in a while which wasn't even that often. took some doing but he got it taken down to 10 grand, the woman that was auditing him was seemingly one of those spiteful down with men types I guess to so that didn't help none.
i think that i've made enough connections to be prepared, and i have an accountant uncle and where I work we do a lot of consulting for our business work and the number of the owners I talk to are business majors/lawyers so you learn more about how to manage a business and not run the one that we're setting up, lol

so, I might've missed something along the lines of reading all of this. What are you selling, and how many will I be buying when the store opens? Oh and what are the proceeds going towards... I like to know that last bit for personal files "Today I gave a bum $5 for cigarettes... he wont need to rob anyone if he starts to get desperate for a smoke *Checks off a good deed*"
admitedly this has taken a bit of a back seat to lots of other things but the biggest thing i plan to do are custom fangrills of all sizes, then custom cut cases, depending on the quality of the machinery i'll also be doing custom machine etched windows. the procedings will go twoards keeping products affordable. i figure for custom cut 120mm fan grills i'd only charge $4 a peice, thats pretty average for a normal mass produced 120mm fan grill, but a great buy when you're able to send the design, lol
if things word out i'd like to expand and eventually become a full range modding shop, but who knows. the biggest thing i want at some point in life is my own computer store. It'll be a kewl one with all night lan parties once or twice a month. I'd charge a door fee but it'd just be enough to cover a ton of pop and pizza for everyone, the lan parties wouldn't be to make a profit, just to encourage more computer to happen :)
lol thats a bit ahead of myself though. atm i'm hoping to get more work done on that cnc router whenever i can find the time which probably wont be until thanksgiving unfortunatly. atm it's near completion and just about ready for the electronics to be installed, then i'll be able to start fiddling around with the software side of it all.
from there i'll open make the storefront a reality :)

well my aim isn't so different in a lot of ways, I'm going for my A+ now so I can work hopefully with a computer business and get a feel for it so I can eventually open up my own shop in which at some point when things got going I may decide to offer custom cases. one thing I do know as well is there is a serious lack of case mod items such as cathodes, LED tube lights and other stuff of the sort, so I would offer a full range of case lighting and fan grills, fans ect. for a decent affordable price (cause lets face it the only place where I live that sells cathodes sells them for $20 before any tax).
oh yea before I forget as well, I would offer an online store alongside my actual shop since none of the computer stores in my province have an online store(minus futureshop or bestbuy that is and their stuff is all prebuilt systems mostly)
I still have many of those same dreams. I've always wanted to open a shop and offer training classes on basic stuff (going off the best buy services both in home and in store) but I would not need to charge them $200+ to pull spyware off their system. Now that I'm working full time IT for a company, I've set my dream on the back burner until I can afford to purchase a small store front... The major issue would be trying to compete with Best Buy and Computer Discount... two companies that the masses in my area have decided know what they are talking about. At any rate, cheers two both of you and it sounds promising.
yeah i know what your saying. it's funny though, me and a friend do repair on the side and for the most part it's just virus removal, but we charge what we think is fair, it is generally $30-40, doesn't usually ever go higher, but some of the computers i've fixed already, i know bestbuy would have easily charged $200-$300 to have them fixed and it would have simply ended with them wiping the os and reinstalling it. here i'm able to in most cases clean out all the viruses and such over night and get it back to a stable condition. it's not even time consuming because while it's scanning i'm doing something different. It's actually a bit hard to beleive that geek squad can charge such outrageous amounts and still be in business. but if you guys wanna be a little sneaky and getting them to refer you, just casually mention while you talk to them how much the geek squad would have charged, lol. they are always really happy to hear it cost them as little as it did and i think that is what generates the most referrals to me. that and i do the job right the first time :)

I think it might help me out that I used to work for Best Buy as a seasonal sales floor worker... I told them when I hired in that if I dont agree with something then I would never push to sell it. I knew a few of the Geek Squad Agents personally, and I knew that they knew their stuff, but if I didn't feel charging a customer $300 bucks for a wireless network install was warranted then I wouldn't even try to sell it to them. The other thing I got nailed for was AND I QUOTE "This is one person, (meaning me) I can not recommend hiring back on full time or even part time because he was too helpful with the customers" That was from a confidential e-mail from our Department Head to the G.M. of the store... mean while my department sup. was pushing to keep me on because I had return customers that no longer shop with them.
My Uncle had a Geek Squad come to his house and for an hour he worked on the computer, my Uncle paid him $120.00 and when he went to use the pc the problem wasn't corrected. I came into town 3 days later and I worked on his computer for 3 days while I was there and he hasn't had any more problems with it and it's been 18 months now. He gave me a G7 for my work. He's happy and I'm happy. Happy Modding to ya.
yea Ive heard so many horror stories involving the geek squad and things they do, what they charge ect. quite ridiculous really. dunno how many of you watch it but diggnation episode 107 had a bit in it about a geek squad guy stealing porn from a customers computer and putting it on his thumb drive.
